Carry a Mobile Wifi Hotspot Wherever You Go

More and more people today are finding out that they can get internet wherever they are, even when they are no where near an Ethernet Port or a wifi hotspot. They are getting the internet through their cell phone provider through what are called 3G signals. These come off the cell towers just like cell signals.

These days there are a multitude of handheld devices that can use this signal, including the recently released iPhone 3G. You can also get a PCMCIA, Expresscard, or USB dongle to receive this signal on your laptop. But there’s a way to take this signal and make it into a portable wifi signal: through a mobile broadband router.

Essentially these 3G routers accept the modem card that your provider gives you and turns it into a wifi halo that anyone can use (as long as you let them). There are several different types of models out there, like the Kyocera KR2 for instance. It accepts PCMCIA, expresscard, and USB modems and uses the EV-DO 3G signal. If you’re not on EV-DO, you could also try the Cradlepoint router.
